Senior Cycle Syllabi
On your behalf we have sent several letters to the NCCA expressing our serious concerns over the draft syllabi in Physics, Chemistry and Biology as they are currently constructed. Lack of depth of treatment of topics on the syllabus and lack of clarity on the assessment of laboratory practical work are major areas of concern in such a high stakes examination as the Leaving Certificate, which ultimately determines the course choices of students.
Our subject convenors will make short presentations at a plenary session at 4pm.
Biology – Ms Úna Moroney [email protected]
Physics – Mr Sean Finn [email protected]
Chemistry – Mr John Daly [email protected]
Junior Cycle Student Awards
Ms Yvonne Higgins [email protected] our Junior Science subject convenor, will also give a short summary to teachers at the plenary session Annual Business Meeting on Saturday 12th April at 4 pm in NUI Galway

In view of the serious implications of the above syllabi for the future of science education in Ireland, ISTA has commissioned Professor Áine Hyland, an International expert in education, to carry out research to answer the research question “What is international best practice in the drafting of syllabi for second-level curricula?”
Professor Hyland’s research report will be launched at 3pm on 12th April at the ISTA Annual Conference in NUI Galway. |
